Esperance

Esperance is a renowned Western Australian holiday destination, known the world over for its beaches and pristine environment. Esperance is situated 200km south of Norseman at the end of the Nullarbor Plain, and after your drive though the desert plains is a tropical paradise. Esperance is also called Bay of Isles and along with its wonderful beaches and picture perfect coastal scenery is a major agricultural centre for Western Australia. There's simply no better place than Esperance Australia for getting close to nature and wildlife.


With a coastline that is dotted by the islands of the Recherche Archipelago in the Esperance Bay of Isles, you'll discover an amazing marine experience and a hinterland backdrop of magnificent national parks and native bushland. An Esperance holiday would not be complete without travelling the Great Ocean Drive, a 38km scenic round-trip that drives you past many natural Esperance attractions including the Pink Lake, a local wind farm and stunning Esperance beaches. Expect to see the most spectacular coastal views of your life.


There are a number of tourist attractions around Esperance, and plenty of things to do. In the town itself is the interesting Museum Village which hosts a number of historic buildings and other attractions including a gallery and craft shop. Why not wander through the street of Esperance looking at all of the interesting shops that line the streets and stopping for a great tasting coffee at one of the many cafes with al fresco dining.


If you're happy to brave the cool waters and keen to witness the natural environment of sea lions and dolphins in Esperance, then there's plenty of opportunity for you. Just offshore, Woody Island is popular for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving Esperance waters. The Woody Island Nature Reserve is also great for bird watching and bushwalking. Fishing is great around the Esperance Jetty at the northern end of the Esplanade, although fishing charters are available if you'd prefer to go out on a boat.


Within Esperance Bay are around 100 small islands which are home to Australian Sea Lions, Cape Barren Geese, Dolphins, New Zealand Seals, Sea Eagles and plenty of other wildlife. Diving around the islands is popular, as is experienced diving to the various shipwrecks in the Bay of Isles including the Lapwing Wreck and the Sanko Harvest Wreck.


Why not take a day trip to one of the many National Parks around Esperance, perhaps visit the Cape Arid National Park which is east of Esperance at the beginning of the Great Australian Bight or Cape le Grand National Park between Esperance and the Cape Arid National Park, Peak Charles National Park which is north of Esperance, and Stokes National Park which is west of Esperance. All of the National Parks offer fantastic bushwalking and some glorious rocky beaches, and not to mention if you are visiting at the right time of year you can be witness to many species of wildflower that are in full bloom here during September and November. You see many of the attractions and surrounding places of Esperance on your own but if you would prefer to travel with a knowledgeable guide then you can easily arrange a seat on a number of fantastic tours that will take you to one or all of the main attractions in and around Esperance.

If you are looking for something to do inside, you should visit the Esperance Aquarium which is a great way to see local marine life, without diving into the often cold local waters. Esperance is located at the southern end of Western Australia, so the climate can more often be quite cool and you may prefer to stay out of the water during winter months.
