Tasmania

Tasmania is one of the enigma's of the Australian tourist scene. It is more like England in appearance that part of Australia. it has some of the worlds most important wilderness regions that are still almost completely untouched by man and is also the home of some truly spectacular mountain and coastal scenery. its links to Australia's early history through convict settlement and development are still evident where ever you travel in the state.

Hobart lies in the south of Tasmania and is situated on the shores of the Derwent river. The center of the city is a constant reminder of the historical past with store buildings in Salamanca place lining the constitution docks where the local fishing fleet still berths. These building were all constructed with convict labour.

Tasmania has many other places that are popular with tourists. The Port Arthur ruins are the place where the original convict settlers were imprisoned and the harshness of their existence can be relived today by walking through the ruins of this historical place. In the midlands are several mountainous areas where the scenery is quite spectacular. Cradle Mountain National park is the best known and every visitor to Tasmania should come here. There are several resorts and the bushwalking trails are very special. On the west coast are the Franklin and Gordon River systems and a cruise here will take you through one of the true wilderness areas still left in the world. Ancient forests of Huon pine line the shores and the entire region is protected by both national park and world heritage listing. This is a state of many contrasts and Tasmania is a must visit destination for any international visitor.
