Kakadu

Kakadu National Park is Australia's largest national park, extending nearly 200 kilometres from north to south, and over 100 kilometres from east to west. It protects samples of all major landforms and habitat types of the Top End of the Northern Territory. No visit to the Top End can ever be complete unless you experience the magnificent Kakadu National Park. It is supremely beautiful and immensely important for its Aboriginal history and unique ecology.

Kakadu has 1600 types of plant life and a third of Australia's native birdlife and the area is believed to be 2 billion years old! The park also protects an entire river system - the South Alligator River. Aboriginal people have lived in Kakadu for about 50,000 years, leaving a wealth of archaeological and art sites that provide insights into Aboriginal culture and the environmental changes witnessed over countless generations.

Allow as much time as you can to visit Kakadu. A day tour from Darwin is a great introduction, though if time permits stay overnight so you can give yourself at least two full days if you can. Drive yourself or take one of the many guided tours from Darwin. Kakadu is a very varied and complex place, so even if you have a rental vehicle, take a guided day tour which concentrates on either Aboriginal culture or the environment.
