Mount Selwyn

Mt Selwyn lies in New South Wales to the north east of the other well known southern Snowy Mountains ski resorts, including Thredbo, Perisher, Charlottes Pass and Blue Cow all located in the Jindabyne area. Located in the Northern section of Kosciuszko National Park, the Selwyn Snowfields is a perfect example of family skiing made affordable and fun. They offer a variety of programs and action packed experiences that you are sure to treasure for years to come.

A day-only ski resort with no accommodation, Mount Selwyn is billed as the most family-friendly of Australian winter ski resorts. With a top elevation of 1,614 metres and 12 ski-lifts, the ski field lies on the northern slopes of the mountain. There is a wide range of activities available including downhill and cross-country skiing, snow tubing, and snow biking.

With its eleven lifts and runs of all standards, Mt Selwyn is primarily marketed as a friendly, family orientated ski resort. Selwyn is ideal for those beginning skiing or snowboarding since the runs are not too long or arduous. The longest run is around 800m and the base is at 1490 metres whereas the top is 1608 metres.

In addition to the ski lifts there is also a toboggan park, a snow-tube park and almost 50Km of cross country ski trails of varying length. As in other resorts in the Snowy Mountains, snow making at Mt Selwyn is undertaken on an impressive scale and covers 80% of the runs. This ensures that under most conditions there should be ski-able snow. So if Mother Nature hasn’t been all that kind during the ski season you are still guaranteed perfect snow skiing conditions. Weather permitting, the ski season usually lasts from June to August and often extends well into September and early October.

There is no accommodation on the snow so you have to stay 15 minutes or more from the slopes in nearby towns and drive in each day. The nearest accommodation is at Providence Portal on Lake Eucumbene, Old Adaminaby, Anglers Reach and Adaminaby, where you can find cabins, lodges and houses that are fully equipped with everything you will need for a comfortable and enjoyable holiday in the snow.  Every property is self contained as well as having the necessity of central heating for warmth on those cold winter nights, and if you are lucky enough you might even have the added bonus of a nice open log fire to curl up around. Within each town you can find cafes, restaurants, shops, post office, medical centre, supermarkets and retail outlets for anything that you may need or if you just feel like treating yourself and dining out for the night.

The kids are completely taken care of with a number of great programs for them to join in on.  From the Bouncing Bogong Jumping Castle to the Junior Riders and Sliders program, that will just have so much fun, and perhaps give you a well deserved break. The staff at Mount Selwyn also run a Mega Mite Lesson where kindergarten aged children (ages 5-6) learn the basic skills that they need to get started for the first time at skiing.

Mount Selwyn also has great family activities for the whole family, such a snow tubing park and Toboggan Park where you can slip and slide down the slopes and have fun all day long.  Not only fun for the kids, but the big kids love it as well.
