Eden is situated in New South Wales, on the deep harbour of Twofold Bay and is rich in fishing and whaling history and remains a fishing town, and it has also become one of the best places to come and experiences whale watching for yourself. With whale watching being one of the key tourist attractions for the town, this picturesque and quiet town also offers a wide variety of waterways, forests and mountain attractions. The southern gateway to the Sapphire Coast, Eden is set in rugged beauty with golden sandy beaches and crystal waters to the east and forests and parklands to the west.
Eden is seeped in history, from it whaling days, to the fascinating wrecks located just off its shores to the timber exports that Eden still thrives on to this very day. Although the actual whaling industry was abandoned many years ago, back in the days when men and killer whales worked together to herd the gentle giants for the whaling industry, you can learn about it at Eden's fascinating Killer Whale Museum. As well as this you can often catch the wondrous sight of whales frolicking off our shores on their twice yearly migration. You can enjoy this fascinating pastime from the mainland or from a boat, including those equipped for whale watching cruises by local operators. The skeleton of Old Tom, last of the herding killer whales of Eden, is an impressive exhibit. Visit Davidson Whaling Station the longest-operating shore-based whaling station in Australia at Kiah Inlet, Boyd’s Tower and Boydtown to absorb the colourful history of Eden.
Eden is a town that is based around the sea, from it excellent fishing, surfing, diving and boating activities it makes for the perfect holiday for anyone wanting to spend most of it on the water. From the calm surround ocean you can dive the wrecks of Eden with its array of wonderful underwater marine life and fish just waiting to be discovered. Charters offer all weather diving from Merimbula to Green Cape and daily fishing trips. Cruise Boats offer discovery cruises on Twofold Bay during which its history is unfolded and dolphins, seals and whales may also be seen.
For splashing about in the warm calm waters of Eden there are several beaches right in the heart of Eden. From Aslings for the great surfing and rock pools to go exploring in, to Corcora for family fun with facilities or Snug Cove with its caves to hide in.
See the trawlers at Snug Cove unloading their catch of the day and then sample their catch at one of many cafes or restaurants at the Wharf where you can dine on great food with the added bonus of an excellent view to compliment your meal.
There are many fascinating things to see when you visit the seaside town of Eden from a trip to Lookout Point, Rotary Park and Seamens Memorial Wall are up the hill from Eden Wharf. They offer panoramic views over beautiful Twofold Bay to Mt Imlay. There is a Picnic area, toilets, and playground. You can also visit Boydtown and the Seahorse Inn, which were built in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay by an early whaling king whose name it bears. The historic inn has been restored and the ruins of Boyds church can still be seen today.
Bushwalking through the beautiful adjoining forest areas is also popular with visitors and locals alike. Ben Boyd National Park is close by and is a wonderful example of Australian coastal wilderness, incorporating natural forests and unspoilt beaches. Mount Imlay, which stands behind Eden, gives a splendid vantage point from which to view the rest of the Sapphire Coast to the north, south to the Victorian border and west to the plains of the Snowy Monaro region.
The township of Eden itself has many shops for all your holiday needs, including supermarkets, sporting requirements, fashion, restaurants and of course, souvenirs.
